First Language in the World


Tamil is one of the ancient living languages in the world. It is the 1st Language declared as the Classical Language in Universe. There are 120 million people speaking Tamil Language around the World. It is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry). It is also an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore and has significant numbers of speakers in Canada, London, France, Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.



  • According to the literary proof, Tamil is formed from Kumarikandam (Lemuria continent) is one of the lost continents with an ancient Tamil civilization.
  • It is located south of present-day India in the Indian Ocean.
  • The human culture is started on this lost continent.
  • Thus it is proved that Tamil is the first and oldest language in the world.
  • The ancient Tamil kings were very much people oriented. They not only built palaces for themselves but build Temples, Forts, Dams, ships etc. Still, we can see many ancient tamil temples at present.
  • It was ruled by several kings.
  • In ancient days peoples are given importance to develop their language and prove their talents in front of great scholars & writers. So, they created the court called “Tamil Sangam” for the purpose of Tamil language development.
  • This Sangam helps the writers for the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language to their works.
  • In ancient Tamil language goes back to the year 300 BC but its origins are said to trace back even further about 2500 BC. Thus Tamil language is still in use today. It is the language with cultural values.

The Archaeological Survey of India also discovered about 55,000 epigraphical inscriptions in the Tamil language.
